What is Taizé?

These candlelight services draw on the music of Taizé, an ecumenical  Christian community in France.  Instruments accompany the congregation in simple, chant-like prayerful songs.  There is also time for silent meditation and reflection.

Taizé prayer uses the common language of music.  Short songs, repeated again and again, give it a meditative character.  Using just a few words, they express a basic reality of faith, and the singing becomes a way of listening to God.

The music comes from the ecumenical Taizé Community which was founded in 1940 in Taizé, France by Brother Roger as an attempt to heal divisions between Christians and to overcome conflict in the human family.  Today Taizé is a place where hundreds of thousands of young adults from every continent come to pray and prepare themselves to work for peace and reconciliation in the world.  See their website at www.taize.fr.

On the Monterey Peninsula Taizé prayer services are held on the second Friday of each month from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., alternating between First Presbyterian Church of Monterey and other churches in the community.  Call 373-3031 for more information.
